Sulmthaler Chickens

This is a black Sulmthaler. The females of each variety are smaller and do not vary much in color.

Here is a black male and female in one of our chicken tractors.

Sulmthalers are a rare Austrian breed reputed to be the best tasting chicken in the world. Because they require up to a year to mature, they are not commercially viable as meat birds. They were, however, included into the Slow Food Ark of Taste for fear that they might go extinct. Here at Nettles Farm we had 3 breeding pairs, and produced meat birds for our friends, all members of the Sulmthaler Club until 2017. Currently poultry breeding is on hold.
